Gran Turismo 5 is easily one of the most anticipated racing games ever. Considered by many as the holy grail of racing simulators, many PS3 fans were eagerly awaiting its release later this year. The game was previously scheduled to make its debut in Japan in March, but Sony has now said that the game has been delayed with its release date moved to an ominous TBA.
The game was previously scheduled for a “Summer 2010” western release, and Sony has not made any official comment on how this will be affected. It stands to reason however that the Japanese delay will lead to delays for the rest of the world.
PS3 owners have been awaiting the release of Gran Turismo 5 for as long as there has been a PS3, as the game was announced at E3 in 2006 for what was at that stage Sony’s upcoming next generation console platform.
Since then a reported $60 million has been spent on the game which will feature over 1000 different cars and 20 different locations.
Sony showcased the game running in 3D at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show. With the delay following in the wake of the 3D demonstration of the game, many are suggesting that it is in fact due to added development time needed to properly implement 3D compatibility.
There is still the possibility that the game will meet its midyear 2010 release in Europe and the US, although speculation is all there is at this time.
