Elysium trailer released for SA-born director’s next sci-fi epic

10 April 2013

The first trailer for South African director Neil Bloemkamp’s Elysium has been released, and it looks to be a perfect blend of Halo-like sci-fi settings and District 9’s grittiness.

Elysium is set in the year 2159, where the wealthy have moved to a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, leaving the rest of humanity on a derelict and devastated Earth in the background, with all the poverty and crime in tow.

The people on Earth need the medical care on Elysium, and one man, Max (Matt Damon), takes on the dangerous task of infiltrating Elysium to not only save himself, but the rest of Earth as well.

The film also stars  Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, Carly Pope and Alice Braga, and will hit theatres on 9 August 2013.
