EVE Online publisher CCP Games has announced that a TV series based on its famed sci-fi MMO is in the works.

The company announced that the show will be helmed by director Baltasar Kormakur (Contraband, The Deep), and will explore the stories of actual EVE Online players.

Players who have experienced great moments in the MMO are urged to submit their stories, which will serve as inspiration for the show.

“The inhabitants of the notorious and beloved EVE Universe have ten years’ worth of dramatic stories to tell,” said CCP chief executive officer Hilmar Veigar Petursson. “Our close collaboration with Baltasar and his creative team gives me confidence that we will capture EVE’s essence, inspiring millions of TV viewers with visions of humanity’s future.”

“The EVE universe is full of astounding stories of epic battles, daring heists, and gripping political intrigue, all of which will make for an amazing television series,” said Kormakur. “The opportunity to interact with the fans of the EVE Universe directly opens up all sorts of exciting possibilities.”

EVE Online has been active since 2003 and has generated a cult-like following. The game was selected as 2009 Game of the Year by MMORPG.com. For the second year running, EVE Online was voted 2010 Game of the Year by MMORPG.com on January 14, 2011, which beat World of Warcraft for the title.
