Play Civilization 5 free this weekend

7 June 2013

The popular strategy game Civilization V is free for all Steam users this weekend, allowing players to experience the turn-based game without paying a cent.

The reason for the temporary free-to-play offering is to celebrate the upcoming expansion Brave New World expansion, which is now available for pre-order.

The free weekend deal is now live, and will run until Sunday, 22:00 local time.

In Civilization V, the player leads a civilization from pre-historic times into the future on a procedurally-generated map, achieving one of a number of different victory conditions through research, diplomacy, expansion, economic development, government, and military conquest.

The game is based on an entirely new game engine with hexagonal tiles instead of the square tiles of earlier games in the series.
