After fans of indie games rejoiced to the news of Fez 2 (announced at E3 2013), creator Phil Fish has dramatically cancelled the project.
“It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that Fez 2 has been cancelled and is no longer in development,” said developer Polytron on Twitter. “We apologise for the disappointment.”
Before the cancellation tweet, Fez creator Phil Fish said on his personal twitter account: “I’m getting out of games because I choose not to put up with this abuse anymore.”
The community speculated that Fish’s tweet was in response to GameTrailers producer Marcus “Annoyed Gamer” Beer calling Fish a “tosspot” and “f****** hipster” after Fish refused to comment on the Xbox One’s self-publishing policy for indie devs; but Fish squashed that idea.
“To be clear, i’m not cancelling FEZ II because some boorish f**k said something stupid,” tweeted Fish. “I’m doing it to get out of games.”
A bit of a disappointment to fans, as the first Fez was a unique platforming puzzle game that brilliantly showcased what appeared to be a flat 2D world, that players were able to manipulate in a horizontal 3D plane, rotating the game world to solve puzzles.

This is all really a big “Bullying” showcase. I don’t know if he is really planning on quitting or if this a stunt but either way this is sad as he has only just entered the niche market of indie game development. I really loved Fez and I would have loved to see a number 2…but at least this way Fez’s dignity will never be destroyed 🙂
