According to Bloomberg, two (mysterious, unidentified) industry insiders are claiming Microsoft’s in talks with former News Corp guy Peter Chernin about an Xbox TV channel. Discussions are apparently ongoing over at Redmond HQ, with Chernin having suggested Microsoft raise the Xbox LIVE $7.99 monthly subscription price by “$1 or $2” to include programming aimed at the “online service’s young, male target audience”.
As a mature, female gamer, I’m not convinced I want to pay more cash for something I’m not even remotely interested in. But then, I pay tax under much the same conditions, so whatever.
Besides, it’s not entirely without precedent. Xbox LIVE is currently partnered with the Netflix video streaming service in the States and Sky TV in the UK, so a move to include an exclusive TV channel doesn’t look altogether unlikely. Whether this would be a similarly regional offering remains to be seen, however.
