PWC has released a new outlook report on the South African entertainment and media sector, delivering some interesting stats regarding the state and forecast of gaming in the country.

The report reveals that the gaming market in SA generated R2.2 billion in revenue during 2012, with forecasts to reach R3.3 billion in 2017.

The console market generated R919 million in 2012, with 2013 expected to reach R919 million. The PC market racked up R394 million in 2012, with expectations of R391 million for 2013.

In terms of market share, 2012 saw 43% of the market belonging to console, 18% to PC, 32% to mobile, 6% to online and 1% to advertising.

While PC gaming and consoles have becoming increasingly prevalent, the report states that mobile devices have become SA consumers’ primary gaming platform, however, the traditional platforms will remain prominent.

“With a low level of broadband access, gaming services like online gaming, and even the digital distribution of console and PC games in South Africa, lag behind more mature markets such as those in Western Europe,” reads the report.

“South Africa’s early strength in the PC gaming market and a robust multi-generational console market offer a stable platform for future gaming and a launch pad to the rest of the continent.””
