Videogame: The Movie

10 May 2010

Grant Hinds is the presenter for GameState, South Africa, if not the world’s, greatest online TV Show… Make a movie of a game. Or GameState. You know, whatever…

I’m busy reviewing Super Street Fighter 4. It’s everything I ever dreamed it to be. I was fortunate enough to own Super Street Fighter 2 on the Sega Megadrive when I was a lightie.

My house became the local bubby-shop and the tournaments were fast, furious and insane. My brother and I trained hard. We were Ryu and Ken embodied, incarnate. I would literally practice the Dragon Punch on the tree in the yard. Beat the crap out of those leaves.

So can you imagine my excitement when the Street Fighter: Legacy videos were released. They are literally everything Street Fighter is meant to be. The casting is perfect (Ken looks remarkably like Tom Cruise which is clearly realistic) and the tone is perfect. It’s amazing how small production houses can actually capture the mood and feeling of playing the game more so than big budget movie directors. Take a look at the Purchase Brother’s short Half-Life film called Escape From City-17

These movies are honest, short and leave me wanting more. They add to my experience of the game. They give me something to drizzle over the nostalgia of my gaming.

I’m really enjoying SSF4. This movie is getting me more and more pumped than I already was. If you love videogames, watch this series. If you have a tiny budget and basic film skills, make a fan video. It might be greater than what the greatest film makers in the world could produce. On that note they’re making another Silent Hill movie. Siiiiighhh…
