6 cool comics based on videogames

13 May 2010

There have been numerous games created from concepts originally put down on comic book pages, but sometimes comics are spawned from a game. Some would suggest that the two are intrinsically linked; after all, you’re here because you love games, and who doesn’t like a good graphic novel? Below is a selection of some of the better (or free) comics based on videogames for your reading pleasure. Hopefully they will add a whole new entertainment dimension to your gaming experience.

Doom Comic

Paradoxically regarded as god-awful and totally awesome at the same time. The original Doom comic was produced in 1996 by Marvel as a giveaway at a games convention. If you haven’t seen and read this rough diamond, head on over to Doomworld where u can view its entirety.

Mass Effect Redemption

With a story by computer game script writing veterans Mac Walters (Mass Effect 2 lead writer) and John Jackson Miller (Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic), Mass Effect Redemption tells of another of Shephard’s adventures. The comic is set on the premise of Dr. Liara T’Soni whom is on a deadly mission in the lawless Terminus Systems when fate conspires to have her path cross with that of Shephard.

Gears of War

The Gears of War comic is still going strong, with the 12th instalment due out in June. Along with Marcus, the comics flesh out some of the other characters in the series, such as Baird. Inevitably, Delta squad faces incredible odds as they’re surrounded and absolutely out gunned by the Locust.

Dead Space

Most agree that the game kicked ass, and considering that some of the creative team on the game were comic book industry veterans, the game and story practically demanded a graphic novel. The comic fleshes out a lot of the back story for the Characters aboard the doomed Ishimura, and serves as a prequel to the animated movie – Dead Space: Downfall – which was a prequel to the game. The first issue of six is available for free viewing. More here.

Dante’s Inferno

The original poem was a hit back in the 14th century, and Dante Alighieri’s agents haven’t been slacking off. Today you can play the totally awesome and action-packed video game rendition, or kick back with graphic novels. Somebody is bound to miss the allegorical point of the whole thing, but it’s all about having a good comic to read. More here.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

To prove that I haven’t forgotten about the good old days amidst the slew of great new contemporary comics, I’ll make mention of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. The classic adventure title also received its own graphic novel, detailing the adventure of Indy as he searches for Atlantis and thwarts Nazi plans. Although it is no longer in print, one can find it here and there on the Internet if one looks hard enough.
