PS4 to lead this console generation: report

11 December 2013

Market research firm DFC Intelligence has shared highlights of its latest report with Games Industry, suggesting that the PS4 is off to the best sales start of any console in history, forecasting  that it will likely be the leading console in this new generation.

DFC notes that:

  • PS4 sold 2.1 million units in the system’s first two weeks on sale (first in North America and then in Europe);
  • PS4 beats the Nintendo Wii, which sold 1.6 million units in its first two weeks (in Japan and North America);
  • PS4 beats the Sony PS2, which sold 1.4 million units in Japan in March 2000;
  • Xbox One sold over 1 million units in its first two weeks;
  • DFC expects the PS4 could outsell the PS3 (80 million as of November 2013), but may not beat the sales of the PS2 (155 million as of March 2012).

“The initial success of the PlayStation 4 bodes well for its future. The PlayStation 2 and Wii went on to be the best selling console systems ever. DFC Intelligence does not believe that the PlayStation 4 will surpass those systems but reiterates its forecast that the PS4 will be the number one system of this generation,” said DFC.

“The Xbox One has been difficult to find although from all indications DFC believes Microsoft did not ship as many units as the PlayStation 4.”

    Well it’s not hard to believe since XboxOne has only shipped to a quarter of the world.
    Same goes for the sale figures, I can’t see how they can justify a comparison.
