Red Dead Redemption out tomorrow, prices compared

20 May 2010

Rockstar’s latest creation, Red Dead Redemption, hits stores tomorrow, and I have not been this excited since Simba bought back Ghost Pops. The Wild West themed open-word third-person shooter has been praised by critics the world over, and it is being widely cited as “the sandbox shooter done right.”

This brief encounter as described by Shacknews’ Brian Leahy pretty much captures the side of RDR that I am most excited about:

“Last night, in Red Dead Redemption, I was walking around Armadillo when a gang of bandits road through town firing guns into the air, dragging a man along behind a horse. Being the upstanding outlaw-turned-deputy that I am, I attempted to save the man by shooting the bandits.”

“I actually shot one of the lawmen doing the same as I was in the chaos, placing a large bounty on my head. I escaped and returned to quickly pay off my bounty. To make up for the lost money, I went and robbed a poker game. I love this game and the moral ambiguity of the wild west.”

A slight shipment delay led to the game only arriving in SA this afternoon. This means that it will be in stores as planned tomorrow, although there is likely to be some delay for those who are receiving it via courier/post.

Megarom sent us this photo to confirm that RDR has landed in SA.

SA’s first Red Dead Redemption shipment arrives

Today is your last chance to pre-order the game, and cash in on the lower prices, and in some cases, free delivery. With that in mind we rounded up the prices at different local retailers.

Retailer Price Special Edition Price Delivery
BTGames.co.za R615 Not on site Free
Take2.co.za R603 R629 R30
Kalahari.net R605 Not on site Free
Zapsonline.com R603 R629 Free pre-order

The Special Edition includes an extra in-game outfit (deadly assassin), golden gun weapon pack, war horse and original soundstrack.

As usual, there is not much separating Take 2, Zaps, Kalahari and BT. If you do opt to have the game delivered, then you may have to wait until Monday. Alternatively, you can pre-order and arrange to collect the game yourself tomorrow.

Remember, in-store prices at BTGames and Zaps will be higher than their online prices. MyGaming forum users however may take advantage of the online prices at Zaps even when buying from the storefront.

To celebrate the launch of Red Dead Redemption in SA, MyGaming is giving away a RDR hamper which includes the game, a shirt, and some soap. Yes, soap. Find out more and enter in the competition forum thread.
