I’ve got a PS4, and to be honest its a bit meh so far. Games are mostly sub-par to average, rather than good. Graphics quality isn’t wow amazing, its mostly incremental. As an example, the 360 versions of Assassins Creed Pirates, and BF4 are very similar quality wise to the PS4. There are minor differences, but nothing you’d notice without looking very closely.
That will change, but suggest to others don’t be in a rush to get one. I’m seriously contemplating getting a Wii U now, as that does have decent games out. XBone isn’t really a consideration for me, not into being spied upon just yet.
Will probably get one at some point, but will wait till they’re a bit more ubiquitous.
I paid for a PS+ subscription, although probably shouldn’t have bothered (yet). PS4 online stuff is a bit on/off. Background download still doesn’t work properly. “There was an error downloading”. So, that “benefit” isn’t really there. I still need to re-attempt download a bazillion times. I wish they’d move to torrents instead of whatever they’re using as a download mechanism.
I can regularly crash the PS4 ui just by doing normal browsing of the game store. Luckily its never a hard crash, can always press the PS button to get back to the menu’s. Game pricing in the store is ridiculous – I can buy a physical disk for cheaper. And the physical disk has a lot more advantages – I can resell, lend etc, vs something tied to my account. You still need to keep a number of accounts too, as they’re still doing the same BS with stuff not available in your region. So, you end up with a US account, a UK account, etc. Digital downloads tied to one account, so I’m most definitely going with physical disk for stuff to avoid all that stupidity.
My PS4 is an Asian one, so I also have the fun of different games having different buttons. In the PS4 menu’s its circle for accept, in games for *some* parts its X, for text entry its circle again, so its a little annoying at times. That also can’t be changed (as yet).
The free games are ok, but nothing great – eg Resogun and the Shadow game who’s name I can’t recall just yet.
Battlefield 4 is buggy, and very underwhelming to be honest. Killzone looks pretty, but is boring. Assassins Creed 4 does look quite nice, but I already have it on 360, so its not worth me spending to get it again.
Out of the opening series of games, I’ve played Blacklight retribution the most.
I keep trying to like BF4, but its not growing on me at all. Multiplayer is ok, but ping times/latency are a little high, 400ms+- vs others at 100ms/200ms.
(4M line, uncapped, nothing else going on downloadwise).
The tv streaming side of things is semi interesting, but much like youtube, its buffering, and stop / start if / when it works, so not usable.
I may get hold of Knack to see if thats any better, but reviews suggest not, and I’m not a fan of football or basketball, so not into the whole Fifa/NBA 201x stuff.
Sony should really have made a stunning launch title to sell the system.
GT6 *would* have been great on this, but that will be years off, if at all. As it is, I think I’ll be putting the PS4 away for a while, and sitting with the older gen stuff till there is something worthwhile.
