2013 was not a great year for games

Metacritic has released its year in review, checking out which titles were ranked tops among the plethora of games released in 2013.

Casting your mind back, you may agree that 2013 wasn’t the greatest year in terms of memorable gaming titles.

As Metacritic notes, only 7 unique console games scored higher than 90% on average. When counting iOS and PC releases, the number of 90+ games climbs to just 18.

Xbox 360, PS3, and PC titles saw their overall average Metascores drop in 2013, while the Wii U, 3DS, and PS Vita saw their average rise.

It is believed that the transition from the old generation consoles to the new may have been holding back the creative floodgates for some developers, while publishers were reluctant to develop new and exciting IP for ageing platforms.
