Sony has launched PS4 firmware update 1.60 which, among other things, adds support for 7.1 surround sound headsets.
Along with the new firmware, Sony also announced a new wireless headset.
The Wireless Stereo Headset 2.0 is Sony’s brand new sleek looking headset. It is scheduled for release this month and will start at $99.
The new headset supports 7.1 virtual surround sound, with a hidden built-in noise cancelling microphone.
The headset is wireless and supports PS4, PS3, PC and Mac, it has a 3.5mm Stereo Jack for other devices, and boasts an 8 hour battery life.
The headset will also connect to a companion app, and from this app you can download custom sound modes created by developers for their specific games.
InFamous developer Sucker Punch has already jumped on that bandwagon, saying that they are busy developing a mode for inFamous Second Son.

One small correction:
“The new headset features 7.1 surround sound”
The headset features “virutal 7.1”, not actual 7.1.
