Five-year-old cracks Xbox password flaw

7 April 2014

Five-year-old Kristoffer Von Hassel of San Diego, USA, exposed a flaw in Microsoft’s Xbox Live services when he logged into his dad’s account without the password.

Von Hassel worked out that entering the wrong password into the log-in screen would bring up a second password verification screen. He then pressed space bar until the password field was full, and the system let him access his father’s account.

“I was like yeah!” he said of his discovery.

“I got nervous. I thought he was going to find out. I thought someone was going to steal the Xbox.”

Von Hassel’s dad, Robert, told Microsoft of the flaw and it was promptly fixed. To show their appreciation, the company sent the young boy four games, 50$ (around R520) and awarded him with a year-long subscription to Xbox Live. His name was also put up on a page thanking people who have discovered problems with Microsoft’s products.

“We’re always listening to our customers and thank them for bringing issues to our attention,” said Microsoft.
