Gaming engines of the future

Your favourite games, as you are well aware, were not created overnight. In fact, they needed a well-oiled gaming engine to get off the ground – an engine built from the bottom up and tweaked to perfection. There are some mainstream engines out there, and some that have been made just for certain games, but the next-gen engines are what everybody is talking about at the moment. CryEngine

The CryEngine has been around for a few years and its capabilities are almost limitless. It was able to get Crysis up and running on a PS3 and I cannot wait to see what is in store is for the future of this powerful piece of software. The latest version of the CryEngine has already showed its true colours in the latest Xbox One title Ryse: Son of Rome.

Unreal Engine 4

A lot of the titles of the last generation started up with the ad ““Powered by Unreal”, and this was because of how easy the engine was to use. It has amazing capabilities and is easy for developers to create games across platforms at the same time. Because of these capabilities, and open source software, the Unreal Engine was largely chosen over the CryEngine for last gen. The Unreal Engine 4 looks unreal, excuse the pun, with some jaw-dropping tech videos and screenshots released recently. It’s hard not to get excited about this engine.

Frostbite 3 Engine

We have not seen much from this engine in terms of future plans and games in development, but if we look at Battlefield – the game that made the Frostbite Engine what it is today – we already have a glimpse of what’s tyo come.
