Best thing ever: Gears of War 3 Beast Mode

18 June 2010

So it’s pretty much the world’s worst kept secret that I’d have Gears of War’s babies if I could. I also stopped thinking about it pretty much the moment I started, because the words “emergence hole” suddenly took on an altogether too appalling prospect. Frag out.

So anyway, Gears of War 3 is getting an all-new Beast mode, previewed over at Joystiq. It’s basically an inverted version of Gears of War 2’s Horde mode, where this time, you’re strapping on your Locust stuff and making COG hotdogs. Enemy Gears become increasingly tougher with each successive wave, both in terms of weapon loadouts, as well as tactics. Oh, and they’re also packing Hammers of Dawn.

The mode uses a sort of currency system, where accruing kills, assists, salacious comments about the Queen, and whatever else passes for excellence in the Locust martial consciousness, generates pretend cash to blow on units. Players start out as Tickers and Wretches (seriously), and – assuming they’ve saved up enough tokens – move onto Grenadiers, Kantuses*, and… wait for it… wait for it… waaaaait for it… Berserkers. Actually, that deserves its own line.

Berserkers.

Although, I really just want to know if there’s a button shortcut to shout “GRIIIIIIIIIIND!”

Gears of War 3 comes out 8 April 2011. If anyone’s invented a time machine, please drop me an email.

*Kanti? I prefer Kanti. I’ve even invented an authentic declension: Kantus, Kante, Kantum, Kanti, Kanto, Kanto, Kanti, Kanti, Kantos, Kantorum, Kantis, Kantis**.

** But nobody gets it. šŸ™
