Papers, Please creator making new game

26 May 2014

Lucas Pope, than man behind the hugely successful game Papers, Please, has announced his next title.

Return of the Obra Dinn is a 3D first-person mystery set on an East Indiaman merchant ship in 1808, and has the look of a black-and-white game from the early Mac OS and DOS days.

“This’ll be a very different game from anything I’ve done before,” said Pope. “I want to experiment with the rendering, story, and a few technical features. Right now I have only a rough idea about the narrative. I’m hoping to capture a compelling mystery with suspense and twists in the limited space of an old merchant sailing ship. It won’t be the typical ‘collect items and look for clues’ structure.”

Pope adds that there will be a “slightly cool gameplay hook,” but won’t be detailing it for awhile yet. He estimates that it will take around half a year to develop Obra Dinn.
