PS3 gets Facebook, video editing, other stuff

29 June 2010

What does the PS3 really, really need?

a. A Facebook app.

b. Anything else, please.

If you answered (b), I’m afraid you’re mostly out of luck. Sony’s pushing out PS3 firmware 3.40 sometime around about right now, and it’s packing a Facebook app. Because, like, your PS3 and Facebook should totally be hanging out more.

The firmware update also brings a video editor and uploader to the XMB, although you won’t be able to capture video content from games. Just, you know, edit and upload existing video content. I’m not quite sure what the point is, either.

Perhaps most significantly, of course, the firmware update enables support for the PlayStation Plus it’s-not-Xbox-LIVE subscription service launching today. For a $50 (well, R489 for locals, because it’s more expensive here, because it just is) annual fee, you get Little Big Planet, Wipeout HD and Sony’s Qore digital mag free, as well as:

Access to a rotating set of free PSP Minis and PSone Classics

Exclusive access to select demos, betas, and early purchases

“First hour” demo access to full titles

PlayStation Store discounts

Automatic game and system downloads
