Classic PC games that went free

13 September 2014

What if I told you that you can download and play classic PC games for free, and it was all legal? No, this is not a pitch for a new Verimark product.

I am not talking about free-to-play with in-app purchases, either – I mean full versions of PC games that gave you hours of enjoyment back in the day.

Here are some of the choice titles.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert

Set in an alternative world where the Cold War has been going on for a while, mega structures have been created, and weapons technology is super advanced, Red Alert was the game that got most of us into the RTS genre.

With its simple gameplay and controls, plus the ability to train blood-thirsty Alsatians, Red Alert is perfect for a bit of “I can’t sleep and need something to do” gaming. Be warned, it is showing its age.

The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall

It might not be the best looking Elder Scrolls game out there, but it is a classic (and it’s free). The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall was the second installment of the franchise we revere today, and was originally released in 1996 for MS-DOS.

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun

Another Command and Conquer that went free, Tiberian Sun saw you battling over land, sea, and air for the precious green and blue crystals. NOD’s artillery and lasers, or GDI’s mech-walkers and disc-throwers – who will you choose?

Try rope a friend in, the multiplayer LANs were always fun.

Ground Control

Ground Control is an epic combination of RTS gameplay and third-person views, letting you take on your enemies without the need for base building and resource gathering.

Focusing on unit management with a point and click style of gameplay, Ground Control lets you take command of a regiment of troops and destroy those who stand before you.

Wolfenstein 3D

You can open your web browser right now and boot up a game of Wolfenstein 3D, gratis. This is thanks to id Software releasing a free, web-based version of the classic FPS in celebration of its 20th anniversary.

It might not come on floppy discs, but it still feels old school.

S.W.I.N.E

S.W.I.N.E, as the name suggests, is a game about pigs. But not just any pigs, RTS pigs who crave glory… and not to be turned into bacon.

The was made free in 2005 in celebration of the Christmas holidays, and has been available to gamers since.
