Fan-made Gears of War 3 trailer looks like the real thing

30 July 2010

There’s a bit of a checklist for Gears of War trailers. Let’s see…

1. The members of Delta Squad limping about, and looking like the sorts of guys who have really meaningful, profound thoughts about stuff, when in the actual game, they’re about as deep as puddles of cold sick.

2. Locust forces turning up in increasingly ridiculous numbers, and in locations and combinations you won’t ever see in the game.

3. An otherwise unlikely but somehow really strangely appropriate music number.

So, here we’ve got Cole dragging himself around, and looking like the sort of guy who might say something really significant at any moment. We’ve got Locust forces starting out as a few Drones, who rapidly multiply and join forces with a bunch of Corpsers on what looks like a rocky plateau. And we’ve got Johnny Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nails’ iconic dreary-as-dreary-gets cryfacer, “Hurt”.

Put together by some guys over at The Duo Group who obviously just get what made previous Gears of War promos work,  this trailer looks just about enough like the real thing to fool the casual observer. Aside from some sketchy animation here and there, anyway. Really, could it get much better than this? Epic should just pretend it’s theirs.
