Unless you’ve been busy travelling through the void chasing down ancient prophecies, you’ll know that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty was released last week – a veritable tactical nuke on the gaming landscape.
The weekend past also saw the first live StarCraft II exhibition event, which was organised by Megarom in collaboration with Asus, Razer and local gaming aficionados 4pooled and I R Gamer. The event attracted the top eight seeded players in South Africa, who then duked it out for an entire day.
Hosted at The Sound Room in Kyalami, Johannesburg, attendees were treated to some lavish surroundings and a fantastic running commentary provided by Sven ‘Shadowthief’ Paulsen and Jonathan ‘ZeeOne’ Attwell of 4pooled. The matches were fast and furious, with a fair number being decided during the opening skirmishes – such is the nature of intense competitive play.
The competition also provided a fair share of epic battles – plenty of mid to late game scrambling for advantage, with final decisive battles which may have gone either way. The crowds were well entertained, and many were probably taking notes on strategies (well, I was…).
Of course, there could only be one winner, and the final match came down to Travis ‘Shase’ Weedon versus Richard ‘ANGRYAFRICAN’ West. Ultimately, Shase was the victor. If you would like watch the replay of the match it can be picked up on the 4pooled sister site.
Congratulations to the event organisers and all the players for putting on a cracking show and giving the South African StarCraft II community something to aspire to.
