How much MyGaming readers spend on their PCs: survey results

1 December 2014

The results are in for the MyGaming PC spend survey, and they make for interesting reading.

514 PC gamers took part in the survey, which was set up to gauge how much the average South African PC gamer spends on their rig.

As most of the respondents to the survey are MyBroadband and MyGaming readers, we can say with a fair degree of certainty that the results are representative of PC gamers who are interested in tech and gaming and have an Internet connection.

The survey had five questions (for those of you who did not take part, tsk tsk):

  • How much did you initially spend on your current gaming PC?
  • How much have you spent on your gaming PC in the last five years?
  • How much have you spent on games in the last five years?
  • How much have you spent on PC gaming memorabilia in the last five years?
  • Which biscuit is your favourite?

Here are the top results from each category.

How much did you initially spend on your current gaming PC?

Over a quarter of PC gamers initially spent over R15,000 on their gaming rigs, while close to 50% of gamers spent at least R8,000 on their PC.

  • R15,000+: 25.68%
  • R10,000 – R10,999: 9.14%
  • R9,000 – R9,999: 6.03%
  • R8,000 – R8,999: 6.03%

How much have you spent on your gaming PC in the last five years?

Similarly to before, close to a quarter of gamers have spent R15,000 or more upgrading their PCs in the past five years.

  • R15,000+: 23.35%
  • R3,000 – R3,999: 6.61%
  • R1 – R999: 6.61%
  • R1,000 – R1,999: 6.42%

How much have you spent on games in the last five years?

The game spend was somewhat lower than that on hardware, as one would expect.

  • R2,000 – R,2999: 16.73%
  • R5,000 – R5,999: 10.70%
  • R1,000 – R1,999: 10.12%
  • R1 – R999: 9.92%

How much have you spent on PC gaming memorabilia in the last five years?

Gaming memorabilia spend was even lower than that on PC games, although 0.78% admitted to spending over R15,000 on collectible items.

  • R1 – R999: 51.56%
  • R0 (No Answer): 26.46%
  • R1,000 – R1,999: 5.25%
  • R2,000 – R2,999: 1.17%

Which biscuit is your favourite?

The moment we have all been waiting for.

  • I only eat bacon: 17.12%
  • Romany Creams: 16.73%
  • Oreo: 12.84%
  • Lemon Creams: 5.06%
Bacon...

Bacon…

So, in summary, a lot of local PC gamers have spent at least R15,000 on their gaming PCs in the past five years, don’t spend much on games (thanks Steam), have bought the odd Far Cry t-shirt or the like, and worship the God of Bacon.

Busy with “upgrade” (New PC) and the spend is currently @ R15K and will cost about another R20K… Instant X-mas bonus killer 🙂
