Best and worst of video game award shows

Video game award shows are a time when great games are honoured for conquering our living rooms, bedrooms, and – if you have line of sight – bathrooms.

This year’s new Game Awards will take place on 5 December – with Geoff Keighley scheduled to host the show – and we thought it fitting to take a look back at the best and worst of video game shows in recent years.

The Worst

VGX 2013

VGX 2013 deserves its own article for being the worst event in the history of gaming. From the wannabe celebrity Geoff Keighley trying to be a presenter, to Joel McHale making jokes that no-one understood, the show was a complete disaster. Prepare to cringe.

Kevin Jonas – VGA 2011

Kevin Jonas made an appearance at the VGA in 2011. For those of you who don’t know who he is, you are not missing out on anything.

Why he was on stage pretending to be part of the industry is beyond me, although Spike has a reputation for choosing terrible celebrities to make appearances.

Neil Patrick Harris – VGA 2010

Why would you put an extremely poorly choreographed dance number before introducing NPH – not cool. That being said, his performance was not much better, and his dry jokes and industry slurs made little sense.

The Best

Samuel L. Jackson – VGA 2012

If you want to include a celebrity in your show, make sure it is Samuel L. Jackson. Nick Fury provided some quality comedy to the awards without making them feel cheesy and awkward, and during breaks you would see clips from games which included the legendary actor.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – VGA 2010

Bethesda had ample opportunity to announce the biggest game of 2011, but decided to do it at the 2010 awards show. The announcement saw Tod Howard walk across stage alongside cloaked figures – it was a fine moment indeed.

The Character Speeches – VGA 2010 – 2012

Up until the terrible show in 2013, when a game won an award it was followed by an entertaining speech from the title’s main character. All these speeches were pretty good, and added some light humour to the evening.
