Free to play Age of Empire Online announced

17 August 2010

Just last month reports emerged that Robot Entertainment – ex-Ensemble Studios guys – was hard at work on an unnamed title known as Project S. Ensemble was responsible for the Age of Empire series.

As it turns out, Project S was actually Age of Empires Online; a free to play online version of Age of Empires which emphasises a social element, persistent gameplay, quests and levelling up. The early screen-shots are vibrant and cartoony, but the game is still recognisably Age of Empires.

Age of Empires Online will run in Games for Windows Live. There is no mention of whether the free-to-play model will be subsidised by micro-transactions (buying stuff in game), or if it is simply being used as a tool to get more gamers using Microsoft’s PC gaming network service.
