Piracy

MyBroadband recently conducted an online piracy survey, which revealed that Telkom’s ADSL service is a firm favourite among South Africa’s Internet pirates. Afrihost is the most popular ISP among pirates.

The online Piracy survey was completed by 4,007 IT professionals and tech-savvy Internet users in South Africa.

The results revealed that 55% of people who completed the survey have pirated copyrighted movies, TV series, music, software, or games over the last 12 months.

The survey showed that 74% of online pirates in South Africa use ADSL as their primary broadband connection. This is well above Telkom’s mobile broadband service, which is second on 6%.

Looking at the ISP of choice for online pirates, Afrihost topped the list with 33%, followed by Telkom Internet on 23%, and MWEB on 17%.

The following infographic shows the most popular broadband connections, service providers, and other details about South Africa’s online pirates.

I maintain my position on this. Although I “pirate” by using non lawful means to obtain entertainment by p2p downloading I always opt to support the items I deem as worthwhile.

Take this for instance – lets say I had no options as currently and the only way I could get my hands on a gaming title such as (in this case) COD AW and I had a doubt about the quality of the game it would have meant that Activision had ZERO chance of making a sale to me.

Now I can really try it out and in the case of games I really dont enjoy I can delete and move on with my life without feeling done in.

Now should I (again a real world case) think that Far Cry 4 will not live up to the hype it is made out to be but 15 minutes after starting realize I was in error it actually resulted in me purchasing something I had ZERO intention of playing.

Same as movies and series. I have box sets bought after I watched and enjoyed it of various series and docus.

Here is a business idea I will support… Enable me to CHOOSE what I want to see and not what you suppose I find entertaining and I WILL subscribe to something “legal”.

Until then…. sorry but I will remain a “criminal”
