The recently announced Star Ocean 5 has been in the dark of late, hiding away from the press and gamers alike, and we’re not sure why. As a result, not much is known about the latest entry in the Star Ocean series, besides the fact that it looks stunning.
Square Enix finally released their first batch of details and screenshots, and thankfully, they tell us a little more about the game. We now know, albeit to a limited degree, a few things about Star Ocean 5’s combat and environments.
Characters
- Fidel Camus – A 23-year-old, one-handed swordsman. Born in the village of Stahl, in the kingdom of Resuria, based on the planet Feikreed.
- Miki Sovesta – Born in the same village as Fidel, this 18-year-old fights with a staff. She is Fidel’s childhood friend and she considers him an older brother. She can heal others as well as herself thanks to the Art of the Cursed Mark
Feikreed
- Feikreed – 6.000 light years from Earth and sporting half of its population, most of which are focused on its biggest continent, Verstill. The level of civilization is similar to Earth back in the 15th and 16th century. The population uses magic called Art of the Cursed Mark.
- Resuria – The fertile nation of Vestill. Blessed with great power; its surrounded by mountain ranges. The kingdom has been ruled by the Barif Dynasty for 300 years, bringing prosperity to the realm. That was until it was lost during the Seven Years of Darkness that has plagued the realm.
- Stahl – A village on the coast. The place where Fidel and Miki grew up. Fidel helps maintain order with his swordsmanship, whilst Miki supports the village with her healing.
Art of the Cursed Mark Background
- A special kind of magic that can only be used by those who have special tattoos on their body. The tattoos connect the magician with the planet, but are also known to have the “curse”. The more complex the mark, the more complex the magic.
- Seven years prior to the beginning of the game, monsters called “Cursed Mark Creatures” appeared and started attacking the population. After searching the remains of these attacks, nothing was found.
- The degree of safety and security started to degrade. Violence in the realm caused the power structure in the government to crumble. Neighbouring countries started to attack the realm creating a state of war. This period was known as the Seven years of Darkness.
Battle System
- You can freely switch characters in battle at the press of a button.
- Each character has different skills and attack patterns when compared to the rest of the series.
- Attacks depend on distance and trigger different actions depending on whether an enemy is far or close.
- Combos can also be used by pressing attacks buttons repeatedly.
- The battle system allows you to string together combos as well as skills in-between attacks. This is known as the “Seamless Real-Time Battle”.
Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness is set for release on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 later this year.
