PS3 Firmware 3.42 out – blocks hackers

7 September 2010

Sony has made a new PS3 firmware update available over the Playstation Network (PSN). Firmware 3.42 is a mandatory update, which means that without it users will not be able to access PSN at all.

No major changes have been detected so far, although it is thought that the main purpose of the update is to block out recent PS3 USB exploits, namely, PSFreedom, PSGroove and PSJailbreak. Reports are coming in from PS3 owners running these hacks that the firmware is successfully stopping them.

User reports are also coming in that there have been some mild aesthetic tweaks to the web browser, with added bold text for easier reading.

There is still no official update list available, but it seems pretty clear that firmware 3.42’s main purpose is to stop recent security hacks.
