South Africa’s top ADSL and VDSL subscribers consume well over 1TB each per month, while the average data use on uncapped accounts continues to grow. This was revealed in the latest ISP statistics shared with MyBroadband.

Web Africa’s head of connectivity Greg Wright said their average monthly uncapped DSL data consumption is 73GB – up 16% from a year ago.

The ISP’s average monthly data consumption per account ranges from an astounding 609GB on uncapped 40Mbps VDSL accounts, to around 70GB on 4Mbps uncapped ADSL.

MWEB CEO Derek Hershaw said people are consuming more and more data. This is partly fueled by higher ADSL speeds.

“In our monthly capacity planning we cater for both the growth in our subscriber base as well as a natural growth in consumption per user,” said Hershaw.

Cybersmart CEO Laurie Fialkov said the average usage by normal users – excluding the top 8% – has increased from around 9GB to 27GB per month since uncapped ADSL was launched.

The average usage for the top 8% has come down. This is because Cybersmart started to enforce a fair usage policy.

Fialkov said many of Cybersmart’s high-end users migrated to its large capped accounts, which served their needs better when combined with the company’s 1,000GB after-hours add-on.

“The net effect is that the average usage over the entire uncapped customer base has remained pretty static,” he said, adding that it creates a fair playing ground.

Biggest DSL data users in South Africa

South Africa’s top uncapped ADSL and VDSL subscribers consume anywhere between 1TB and 4TB of data per month.

Afrihost’s top subscriber, who uses an uncapped 40Mbps account, consumed 4.086TB of data over the last month.

Web Africa’s top user, also on an uncapped 40Mbps VDSL service, consumed 2.3TB in a month.

Surprisingly, not one of Cybersmart’s top users are on uncapped accounts – they are all using the ISP’s capped accounts with a “1000 Gigs Night Rider” add-on. The top user consumed 3.6TB of data.

The following infographic provides an overview of some of South Africa’s top DSL data users.
