Xbox Live Silver changes to “Xbox Live Free”

21 October 2010

Microsoft has announced that from now onwards, Xbox Live Silver will now be called Xbox Live Free. Apart from the name change, the service will remain the same.

The rebranding was made public via a tweet from European Xbox manager Graeme Boyd, and came into effect following yesterday’s Xbox.com redesign.

Xbox Live Gold remains unchanged, and is still required for anyone wanting to play games online via Xbox Live.

The update seems to be a completely superficial one, and should help new users distinguish between the different Xbox Live accounts. You can still buy and download games as well as demos, videos and add-ons from the Xbox Live marketplace as a Xbox Free user.

Xbox Live is set to officially land in South Africa next month.
