When a community manager at PlayStation Asia accidentally quoted the death of PS Vita, we wrote about it, not because we were at all shocked or concerned by the implications, but because we thought it rather funny. Because let’s face it, the PS Vita has long had one foot in the grave.
We won’t deny that the massive increase in indie titles for the PS Vita has done wonders for its health – that is to say, it’s no longer on life support. But it’s still a pretty difficult console to recommend to anyone who is even remotely cash conscious.
There are just too many games on platforms you already own or platforms worth saving for that are given far more love.
So it really comes as no surprise that at a Q&A session at EGX, Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, for all intents and purposes confirmed that there is no PS Vita 2 on the horizon.
When asked about potential plans for another portable console, he replied, “That’s a tough question.” “People have mobile phones and it’s so easy to play games on smartphones,” said Yoshida, following with, “And many games on smartphones are free, or free to start.”
He’s not wrong. It’s simply too difficult for most gamers, even core gamers, to justify a PS Vita when there are just so many other more affordable and just as enjoyable options. Much as Yoshida loves the PS Vita, he’s well aware of that fact:
I myself am a huge fan of PlayStation Vita and we worked really hard on designing every aspect. Touch-based games are fun – there are many games with really good design. But having sticks and buttons make things totally different.”
“So I hope, like many of you, that this culture of playing portable games continues but the climate is not healthy for now because of the huge dominance of mobile gaming.”
It’ll take a drastic change in the videogaming climate before another portable console, the likes of the PS Vita, once again becomes feasible for Sony.

Ah, while in the west it might not sell. . .but in Japan it is the second biggest seller. . .It beats the ps3 and ps4 hands down in sales. . .only the new Nintendo 3DS does better in sales and even that is only by a small margin. . .
And as Space Chief stated. . . .there is no shortage of Vita games. . .there is corpse party coming out this October, then the new Sword Art Online. . .plus beginning of next year we are getting Digimon. . .plus Toukiden did so well they have already announced a second one for next year. . .
Why don’t you do some actually research. . .you can easily see for yourself all the games the Vita has available and are bringing out. . .plus have a look at the sales of the Vita console. . .so while the west might not buy the Vita because apparently everyone is under the misconception that there are no games( and I’m not talking about indies). They would have to be a special kind of stupid to discontinue the Vita as not even their other consoles sell as many as the Vita does. . .
