AMD Radeon HD 6800 price roundup

26 October 2010

AMD has officially announced its next generation of graphics cards, and as you read this, shipments of the cards are heading towards South Africa.

It will take another week or two for the cards to start turning up at retail. A local AMD representative told us to expect them in the first week of November, although a Prophecy representative gave us different information, indicating that we should expect the cards to start shipping around November 9.

As always, pricing and availability will depend on the manufacturers and local distributors. A few local retailers already have the cards listed, namely: Prophecy.co.za, LandmarkPC.co.za, and Rampage-Gaming.co.za, although they do not have stock just yet.

It is important to note, that despite the naming scheme, these are not AMD’s next generation of high performers. The HD 6850 and HD 6870 are essentially mid-range cards, with an emphasis on bringing HD 5800 series performance in at a more affordable price point. The HD 6900 series will be the cards to watch for the performance junkies, and will be announced before the end of the year.

In the meantime, we have gathered local pricing details for those looking to upgrade now.
