Windows 10 to automatically download: part of Microsoft’s strategy to push the OS

Windows 10 - Forced Download

We’ve known since early September that Microsoft has been forcing Windows 10’s download on a number of users, having it installed in the background without the user’s notice.

Of course, Windows 10 doesn’t install itself upon completion of the download, not unless the user consents, but it’s understandably upset a number of people irrespective of that fact.

Not only will it eat the cap of anyone unfortunate enough not to have uncapped data, but it feels rather invasive too.

In fact, it’s that invasive nature of Windows 10 that concerns and stays the hand of many a Windows 7 and 8 user, but Microsoft is determined to increase the operating system’s install base.

110 million devices is clearly not enough for Microsoft, who has decided that from next year, 2016, Windows 10 will install itself to virtually anyone who hasn’t already made the upgrade.

Upon completing the download, Microsoft’s Terry Myerson tells The Verge, “A user will be presented with a choice to install Windows 10.

They’ll come back to their PC and there will be a dialog where they can choose to upgrade to Windows 10 or choose not to upgrade to Windows 10,” said Myerson.

Apparently, you can turn off Windows 10’s nagging, deactivating the recommended installation prompt, but you will have to keep Automatic Downloads on a permanent leash if you wish to avoid the download.

According to The Verge, Microsoft is also working on enticing pirates to join the genuine train.

If you try and upgrade a non-genuine PC to Windows 10 today it says the free upgrade is only available to genuine PCs,” says Myerson. “We’re seeing people be creative to get around that block, and then many are actually going to the Windows Store and buying a genuine license.

It makes sense for Microsoft to have Windows 10 as widespread as possible, especially if they’re to implement advertising into the OS.

As long as the OS doesn’t force installations on users, Microsoft should come out of this relatively unscathed, but that’s not a promise.

I think they should force installs as an update. Bottom line is that it is an update and for a legal copy there is no reason yo upgrade to a fully licensed version that is free.
