Top 5 remastered HD collections

18 November 2015

Remastered re-releases of classic old games (or some games that aren’t even that old) seem to be the flavour of the week in the gaming world.

And while many a gamer may roll their eyes at the “obvious” cash-in opportunity for publishers, there are some incredible collections that give players who missed out on a franchise’s early entries as well as those who played them a shot of reinvigorated nostalgia, for a great price.

God of War Origins Collection

The first God of War Collection is the compilation that started the craze of remastered games on the PS3.

It gives fans a chance to experience God of War and God of War II with improved graphics – both great games – but the God of War Origins Collection was the one that stood out tallest.

The collection features upgraded versions of the two PSP games in the franchise, God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghosts of Sparta.

Don’t be swayed to thinking they’re ‘lesser’ or ‘smaller’ than their console counterparts, as these are two of the most interesting and slickly made GoW games in the series, particularly Ghost of Sparta.

Definitely worth owning.

Jak and Daxter Collection

Before the brilliance of the Uncharted series and The Last of Us, Naughty Dog developed the Jak and Daxter franchise on the PS2.

The first Jak and Daxter game is more of a traditional platformer (channelling the spirit of Naughty Dog’s Crash Bandicoot) while Jak II and Jak 3 are more action-orientated.

Although the two sequels divided the fan base, the Jak and Daxter Collection should still provide plenty of entertainment value for Naughty Dog fans.

Devil May Cry HD Collection

The first Devil May Cry game revolutionised the action genre with its stylish combo-based gameplay.

The third game refined the same mechanics to become one of the best action games of all time, and is still touted as one of the best in the genre today.

Even though Devil May Cry 2 feels quite lacklustre in comparison to the other two games, the Devil May Cry HD Collection is worth the price for the first and third games of the trilogy.

The Sly Collection

The outrageously under-appreciated Sly Cooper franchise features three of the PS2’s best games, so if anything deserved an HD remaster, it was this.

The first sneak-tastic game is more of a traditional platforming experience through linear environments.

For the two sequels, Sucker Punch Productions (who went on to make InFamous) went with a more open-world approach.

All of them include hilarious dialogue and interesting scenarios, and make The Sly Collection well worth the investment.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

Metal Gear Solid needs no introduction at this point, but the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection has to be commended for bringing the beloved games to a new generation.

The collection includes Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and when you bundle together three games that people define as “classics,” you expect an amazing product.

The Metal Gear Solid Collection delivers that in spades.
