Independent game developer The Behemoth has announced that their downloadable hit Castle Crashers has launched on the European (and hence South African) region of the PlayStation Network. The game is available for download as you read this.
Castle Crashers is a 2D side scrolling hack n slash adventure that bowled over critics when it first appeared on Xbox 360. US PSN players have been similarly impressed and the game currently sits with an 86/100 rating on Metacritic.
The game’s hi-res visuals were entirely hand drawn by artist Dan Paladin. For its PSN outing, Castle Crashers has been fitted with several new features, including:
– Local join-in-progress
– Team Arena play
– Brand new Volleyball game mode
– 2 new trophies “You are Insane” and “Social Networker”
– A new Insane Store, with items to help you conquer Insane Mode
Castle Crashers features a mix of beat’em up gameplay action along with RPG elements. Players will hack, slash and smash their way to victory across a fantasy medieval battleground. Along the way Animal Orbs can be discovered which will do everything from helping players find buried items to chomping on the enemy’s head.
For the masochistic, the game also features an “Insane Mode” unlocked after defeating regular mode. When beating up the bad guys just isn’t enough, battle it out in the Arena mode for a team or free-for-all, 4-player deathmatch. Or, because nothing says “medieval” like a good game of volleyball, see who has the best spike in the land in the brand new Volleyball game mode, featuring optional AI opponents for up to 8-player matches.
Add to all this a liberal sprinkling of blood and gore (which, by the way parents, you can turn off), 20 unlockable characters, over 40 weapons and 20 levels.
Castle Crashers is priced on the PSN at €13.99 (±R135) and has a rating of PEGI 16.
