EA now completely owns StarWars: The Old Republic

12 November 2010

I actually thought they already did, but as it turns out, Lucas Arts owned certain portions of the marketing and distribution rights to the game. According to EA, all rights now belong to them, in a bid to centralize “all publishing, marketing and distribution responsibilities” to aid “efficiency”.

It actually makes no tangible difference to the actual game, although the move should simplify the development, funding, and distribution process, which sounds like a good thing, right?

LucasArts is in charge of pretty much everything StarWars related, so it is quite unusual to have them sidelined. They are apparently still “very involved”, with their primary focus being to make sure the game honours the StarWars universe.

StarWars: The Old Republic will be released exclusively for PC in the first half of 2011. It is being developed by legendary RPG developer Bioware, and will be a completely online role playing game.
