A stroll down Artists Alley at rAge 2016 will reveal how you can profit from your creativity and love of both art and gaming.

Many of SA’s talented digital and traditional artists and crafters display and sell their gaming-related artwork at rAge every year.

There is also a market for creating and selling anime, manga and gaming Cosplay costumes, props and accessories to fans.

Teach – or be taught

Gaming at rAge

If you are passionate about computer science and enjoy helping others understand it, you could become a trainer who shapes future game developers and designers.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) offers a major in Computer Games Development, which is taken in conjunction with a major in computer science.

The University of Witwatersrand (WITS) in Johannesburg offers two game design courses – a Bachelor of Engineering Science in Digital Art – BEngSc (Digital Art) and a Bachelor of Arts in Performing and Visual Arts majoring in Game Design – BA PVA (Game Design).

If you are looking to specialise in the 3D animation side of things, Learn 3D in Johannesburg and online offers 1-year accredited courses in 3DS Max, Maya, Mudbox, Autodesk Composite, Adobe After-effects, and Unity 3D.

Game development

The most obvious career in the industry, however, is one where you are actually making video games.

Locally, home_coded showcases South Africa’s game development talent and promotes local growth in the industry.

This initiative was started by NAG in November 2012, and you can meet local devs and chat to them about their projects and careers in game development in general at rAge.

You can also take part in the popular NAG JAM, which will see you developing a game within a time limit (72 hours) two weeks before rAge with all winners’ games being displayed on the NAG JAM / Intel stand at rAge.

The 2016 rAge expo, typically hosted only in Johannesburg, comes for the first time to Cape Town from 18-20 March at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World in Goodwood.

Visit the official rAge expo website for more information.
