eSports will now feature on SuperSport

eSports have continued to gain in momentum and success over the last few years, and we couldn’t me more excited about it. You should have heard us stomping and shouting as this past weekend’s Dota 2 Shanghai Majors took place.

And surprise, surprise, the popularity of this rising international sport and gaming phenomenon has grabbed the attention of television network SuperSport.

SuperSport plans to provide coverage of the IEM (Intel Extreme Masters) World Championship broadcasting highlights from the event this week.

The event was held in Poland this past weekend where 10,000 fans from 120 countries attended. Fans watched professional gamers battle it out in the longest running global pro gaming tour.

Originating in 2006, the competition showcases many games, including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, StarCraft II and League of Legends.

Professional gamers represented their countries across 10 different games all for the chance of winning their share of the $4,638,150 prize pool (R71,641,096 at the time of writing).

In 2015, the League of Legends world championship garnered much popularity. The championship was broadcast in 19 languages across 40 partners.

SuperSport believes that eSports will soon be universally accepted as research has revealed that the medium has been popularised by those from Generation Z (typically born in the late 1990s onwards).

Generation Z grew up on gaming devices and cellphones and now make up a good chunk of the audience watching eSports.

With SuperSport’s growing interest in eSports, we wouldn’t be surprised to see them cover events like the DOTA 2 International, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Majors and probably even the DGL.
