Having played Destiny since Beta on PS4 and The Division since release on PC, I can see some similarities, but the biggest difference is the solo play accessibility.

Destiny’s reliance on meta-game clans and social media ruined it for me. There is so much content locked behind an investment in time and scheduling that it makes it a hassle. A couple of missed sessions with the group and you are permanently behind the curve – unless the group wants to invest several hours into helping you progress and catch up. Don’t get me wrong, I love the game – but to feel satisfied, it needs to be a second (unpaid) job. I’ve bought and sold the game twice already hoping that some of these issues were resolved – sadly, not so much.

The Division, on the other hand, gives a deeper option of solo play. There are some of these missions that I wish I had help, but the option is there and tactical play pays dividends. Story missions seem to scale better than in Destiny and I have been in some missions that spawn NPC allies into the field to help that along. Also, I have yet to run into a “must-have” piece of equipment that a group must grind hours and hours to acquire for each of the members. My level 19 can go from medic/support to tank/CQC to long range DPS in as long as it takes to find cover and ask my team (if I am in one) for suppressing fire to buy me time. Pick up groups have been great so far and even a poor player is worth his weight as added threat to the field. As long as you can help them stay alive and get to cover, they are worth running with as a medic in a pinch.
