Google is creating a startup to prevent its staff leaving for startups

26 April 2016

One of Google’s biggest issues is preventing staff from moving elsewhere in Silicon Valley.

Kevin Systrom worked for Google for two years before founding Instagram (which was subsequently purchased by competitor Facebook).

Google is creating Area 120, a startup incubator that will let some employees pursue their “20% projects” (those personal projects Google allows in a fifth of your working hours) full-time.

Employees who wish to sign up must submit a full business plan and if selected may spend several months with a team to work on their idea.

This might still not be enough to deter employees from jumping ship however, as it is relatively easy to earn start-up capital and the freedom to go it alone may be more enticing than Google’s safety net.

It is not yet clear when Area 120 will officially open its doors.
