There are unconfirmed reports floating around that Sony will finally be making an official announcement about their new handheld gaming device, the PSP2. The date is 27 January and the event will take place somewhere in Tokyo.
The closest thing to solid confirmation is a claim from MCVUK that they have information from “trade sources.”
If true, Sony may be planning to overshadow the reveal event of rival Nintendo’s 3DS handheld, which is taking place in the week before the week of 27 January. While we already have plenty of info regarding the 3DS, the PSP2 remains shrouded in mystery, with no official word on features, design, and looks.
There are however plenty of rumours. The PSP2 is supposedly going to feature dual analogue sticks, a touchpad on the rear of the device, and be capable of producing graphics of similar quality to that seen on the PS3. It is rumoured to be launching in Q4 2011.
Sony has done little to squash these rumours, but we’ll have to wait for the official reveal to find out the real deal on the device. By the way, the headline image is a mock render of what the PSP2 may look like.
