So, PS3 owners will finally be getting their very own version of the critically acclaimed Mass Effect 2 next week, when it is released on January 21st in PAL territories. Sony has revealed that the game will be released simultaneously on Blu-ray as well as the PlayStation Network (PSN).
“In Mass Effect 2, you play as Commander Shepard who has to lead a crack team of mercenaries, scientists and soldiers on a mission to investigate the disappearances of human colonies throughout the galaxy. Who lives, who dies and the ultimate success or failure of the mission, is up to you. Now BioWare and the Mass Effect team are proud to bring Mass Effect 2 to the PlayStation community,” reads the official blurb.
Sony is insisting that the PS3 version is not a ‘simple port’ and that Bioware has “taken the time to utilize the PS3 hardware to the fullest in order to maximize your gameplay experience.”
Apparently, in-game graphics as well as cinematics will be ‘clearer and more vibrant’ on the PS3. Also, the PS3 version will ship with previously released DLC missions – Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker and Kasumi – which Xbox 360 and PC owners had to buy separately.
There will also be an in-game interactive comic which players new to the Mass Effect series can use to catch up on the events leading up to the second game. Supposedly, you will be able to make decisions in the comic which will affect the second game, much like Xbox 360 and PC owners did with the first game.
Grace Chen, Senior Manager of the PlayStation Store, answered a question on the PlayStation Blog regarding the size of the PSN download of Mass Effect 2. “It’s about 12GB,” said Chen.
There is already a playable demo of the game on the PSN right now, which weighs in at around 2GB and allows you to play through some of the introductory parts of the game, as well as meet some of your potential party members.
Mass Effect 2 remains one of the most critically acclaimed games ever released, and retains a Gamerankings score of 95.66% and 94.48% on PC and XBox 360 respectively.
