The Best Video Game Character of All Time

21 January 2011

The 2011 edition of The Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition has just been launched, and contained within, is their pick of the best videogame character of all time.

The conclusion was drawn from the results of a poll conducted by Guinness World Records. Over 13,000 gaming fans voted in the poll. Nintendo dominated the chart with eleven characters in the top 50. In second place was Sony with six characters, and third came Capcom with five.

In the end, there was only one winner – Mario secured the title of the Best Video Game Character of All Time with over 10% of the vote. Mario first appeared in 1981 under the name of Jumpman, the hero in Donkey Kong. He appeared in a few other titles in the years preceding 1985’s legendary Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The title has since gone on to become the bestselling 2D platform game of all time with 40.24 million units sold at the last count. Coming in second on the list of the best video game characters of all time was Link from the popular Legend of Zelda series (Nintendo, 1986). Taking third spot was the genetically engineered super soldier, Master Chief, who made his first appearance a decade ago in Halo: Combat Evolved (Microsoft, 2001).

The poll reveals that 1996 is remembered as the year that produced the most memorable video game characters. Five familiar faces in the top 50 made their first gaming appearance in 1996. These include Lara Croft, who is seventh in the chart; the original gaming star, Pac-Man (Namco, 1980) came sixth in the poll; and Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega, 1990) who once rivalled Mario for gaming supremacy in the 90s, finished in tenth position.
