Game Developer Barbie – fantastic or ridiculous?

23 June 2016

Toy manufacturer Mattel has officially unveiled its new Barbie – and she’s a game developer.

Game Developer Barbie is part of a new product line that aims to be more feminist-palatable amid declining sales, reports The Huffington Post.

She is also incredibly authentic, according to Molly Proffitt, CEO of Ker-Chunk Games, who was brought in to make this new Barbie “believably-techie”.

“The computer has [Javascript] on it and you can see various instances of game engines on her laptop.”

“I really know that girls need an icon that shows that they can be a part of the [tech] space and Barbie does that. She has power to tell girls they can be makers and builders.”

Some believe that is a step forward for both Barbie and the perception of gaming, while others believe the entire premise behind this new doll is ridiculous.

Do you think Game Developer Barbie is a good way of attracting the younger female market to gaming? Let us know in the comments below and in our forums.
