Strategy Informer has managed to get an interview with Robot Entertainment’s Danan Davis, who revealed the pricing model which the game will utilise.
“We’re not going to nickel and dime players,” he said during an interview. “We’re not going to charge players for specific items. You will not be able to go and buy the Epic Sword of Boo, and just destroy everything and pay for that directly, right, that’s not what we’re about,” said Danan.
“We’re also not going to charge a monthly fee – there’s no subscription, no monthly charge. You will be able to buy different packs. You pay for what you want.”
Basically, there will be three unique revenue channels for the game.
Premium Civilisation Packs
When you play Age of Empires Online, you will choose a specific civilisation; however, not all the features of your chosen civilisation will be unlocked. By purchasing the premium civilisation packs you will gain access to extra content, such as additional tech tree options, crafting buildings and items.
Boosters
Boosters will be the primary method of releasing new quests, game modes and story driven campaigns. Players will be able to pick and choose various Booster items, paying only for the content they want to play.
Vanity Packs
These will grant players additional items that offer purely aesthetic value, such as buildings which look different.
Age of Empires Online is due out exclusively on PC sometime in 2011.
