outh Africa’s official distributor of Apple products in, Core Group, finally launches the iPad in various iStore, Incredible Connection, and Dion Wired outlets.
While Apple’s popular iPad has not been officially available in South Africa, this hasn’t stopped people from getting their hands on the device.
Import services charge around R10,000 to bring in the 64GB iPad with Wi-Fi and 3G, but Core will be launching the device with a recommended retail price of R7,599.
It’s not only on the more expensive iPads that Core has priced themselves aggressively, but on the 32GB and 16GB variants as well.
It’s worth noting that there is a rumour that the iPad 2 will be launching within the coming months, therefore it will be interesting to see how well the iPad does at SA retail.
This pricing places the iPad in very aggressive competition with the Samsung Galaxy Tab in South Africa, which has a recommended retail price of R7,999 for the 16GB variant.
The Galaxy Tab does include a micro SD slot which allows the storage space to be expanded by up to another 32GB for a total of 48GB, still falling short of that provided by the similarly priced iPad 64GB.
Storage space isn’t the only factor differentiating these devices, so potential buyers may want to familiarise themselves with the differences (and similarities) between the devices before deciding on which one to buy.
