One of the added pleasures of the PC gaming platform is the often overwhelming variety of mods available for the games. Community driven projects abound, with industrious types flexing their development muscles with projects ranging from texture overhauls and new sound packs to reinvention of core gameplay mechanics and entire stand-alone modifications.
MyGaming recently took a look at the best mods of 2010 so we thought it just about time to see what we can look forward to as well. I am but one man, so my opinion may not weigh much, but the users and contributors of the Mod Database (ModDB) probably do know what they are talking about. Below we have their top five upcoming mods.
5 – Ivan’s Secrets
Ivan’s Secrets is a singleplayer total conversion for Half-Life 2, focusing on horror, tactical shooting and exploration and survival. It is set in the Aral Sea which is now a dried up desert. It features realistic and accurate locations. The player takes on the role of an investigative agent, sent into locate an aircraft that went missing 1 year before hand. The mod has semi-open gameplay – while the player can explore at will, there will always be objectives to keep them heading the right direction.
4 – Cry of Fear
Cry of Fear is a single player total conversion mod for Half-Life 1. None of Half-Life’s assets have been used – it’s all completely fresh content from the developers. The mod looks to be a survival horror which follows the journey of a drug addled protagonist whom awakes in a dark alley with no memory. The world around him has gone mad. It also claims some tantalising elements such as ‘advanced cutscenes’ and the developers promise to reveal more at a later date.
Operation Black Mesa is a total Source Engine remake of Half Life: Opposing Force. “Opposing Force is still an amazing game, although it’s not nearly as amazing as it was when it was released,” say the developers. Seems like a remake is in order. Using the Source engine, the developers plan to recreate the Black Mesa research Facility as it was seen by Corporal Adrian Shephard of the H.E.C.U.
2 – Dear Esther
Dear Esther has made mod news a number of times before because it was originally launched in 2008, winning some awards and earning critical acclaim. The mod is currently being rebuilt by developer Robert Briscoe for Half-Life 2. It is an experimental first-person game that abandons traditional gameplay, leaving only a rich world soaked in atmosphere, and an abstract, poetic story to explore.
Project Reality: ArmA 2 will exist as a standalone multiplayer modification for the ArmA 2 game. It will remain self-contained, self-developing and not rely on or use externally held add-ons from other sources where at all possible. What that means to the player is that it will be a ‘one stop shop’ as an installation package, with no requirement for additional multiple add-on packs.
Project Reality: ArmA 2 is planning some ambitious modern combat PvP gameplay, with numerous high-res assets, vehicles, and weapons. Gameplay mechanics include player controlled bridge layer vehicles, destructible environments, bandaging wounds and way more stuff than can be mentioned here.
