Blizzard will release at least two games by end of 2012

10 February 2011

In frustratingly vague Blizzard style, the company has indicated that should they not release a game in 2011, then they will release at least two titles by the end of 2012. This is according to Activision-Blizzard CFO Thomas Tippl who was speaking during an investor call. The exact words he used were “a minimum” of two titles. He also provided no details on which titles those may be.

Reading between the lines, it might seem that Blizzard has more than two titles in development. We are all aware of StarCraft II expansion Heart of the Swarm and Diablo III, but could Tippl be referring to Blizzard’s  ‘next-gen MMO’ codenamed ‘Titan’? Or could he be referring to the third StarCraft II title, Legacy of the Void?

It also seems that Blizzard is reserving the right to not release anything during 2011 – what with StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and WoW: Cataclysm both being released in 2010, the poor dears must be exhausted.

All joking aside, and speculation moving in to take its place, we’ve done a quick MyGaming office poll to find out which games we think might be released in 2011/2012. The smart money is on Diablo III making it to the retail shelves near the close of 2011; especially in light of the rumour that Heart of the Swarm will only be ready for 2012.

In light of Tippl’s statement, it would appear that Diablo III may possibly get held back to 2012 for the typical Blizzard spit ‘n polish routine, and this would round out the ‘minimum of two’ promise for 2012 with Heart of the Swarm. While we appreciate the care Blizzard puts into their releases in a market filled with rush-job franchise milking (Who said Call of Duty? I didn’t say Call of Duty), the wait for Diablo III is becoming quite torturous.
