Qualcomm unveils the world’s first 5G modem

18 October 2016

Qualcomm has unveiled its first 5G modem, the Snapdragon X50.

The company said the X50 will support download speeds of up to 5Gbps when used on 5G networks.

The modem is expected to be made available in mobile devices during the first half of 2018.

Qualcomm said the modem is designed for early 5G deployments, but there was little detail about whether the X50 will be used in only smartphones or mobile routers.

Congrats! Would be awesome, but in South Africa, one has to ask; on what spectrum? ICASA (IKONA) isn’t doing much about pushing for digital television to free up analog spectrum for cellular networks, and even then, have still unnecessarily threatened to restrict spectrum unless exorbitant prices are forked out. #bleedthecountry #killingyourfuture
