South Africa’s broadband prices vs The rest of the world

Cable.co.uk and BDRC Continental have released a new study comparing broadband packages from around the world.

Over 3,300 broadband packages were compared between 18 August and 12 October 2017.

The results show that Iran offers the cheapest broadband in the world, with an average package price of $5.37. Burkina Faso had the most expensive broadband in the world, at $954.54 per month on average.

Sub-Saharan Africa fared worst overall as a region, with almost all of its 31 measured countries in the “most expensive” half of the ranking.

Ranking

To create the ranking, the researchers determined the primary fixed-line telecoms providers for each country. Their prices in local currencies were extracted and compiled into averages, and the average prices were then converted to US dollars.

The average dollar prices of broadband packages were then ranked – with South Africa coming in at 97 out of 196 countries.

When ranking according to the dollar price per Mbps per month, however, the picture changes dramatically.

Iran slips from first to 119, and Singapore takes the top spot – where it was previously 57.

The data collected by the study is available through Google Sheets, with live currency conversions. The table below highlights the results.
